Product Description
Motionless, Suzanne gazed across the river at exploding images of destruction and despair as the city she called home had just been shattered. Staring at the billows of smoke that now engulfed downtown, she realized that the world had changed forever. This was not a scene from some far away war torn place. This was New York City.

Her country's freedom now under attack, Suzanne finds herself without a job and without a purpose. Finding a severance notice in her inbox, she leaves behind her comfortable executive lifestyle and journeys alone beyond her comfort zone to liberate her spirit and claim personal freedom.

Traveling with a sense of adventure in her heart and only what possessions she can carry in a backpack, she finds her way to the far corners of the world where few have ventured. Suzanne takes us on a rich, personal odyssey, returning home one year later to Ground Zero where it all began. As she returns to her beloved city, she is filled with renewed purpose, a broader perspective of the world, and a greater understanding of herself and humanity.

5 out of 5 starsThe Trip of a Lifetime, 2008-10-27
I really enjoyed this story or really, series of interconnected stories about a solo trip around the world. Ms. Anthony has gone where so many of us think we would like to go, but have never had the courage. Her stories ring true with tales of both the wonderful and difficult aspects of travel. I thoroughly enjoyed her tales of the people she met and the places she visited. Each one was a relatively short description of an interesting place and experience. It only whets my appetite to get out and travel some more myself.

5 out of 5 starsAttention Global Travel Enthusiasts, this is for you!, 2008-09-21
This summer I had the opportunity to read a book by Suzanne Anthony, titled "Alone but Never Lonely -- A Year of Borders, Beds, and Backpacks. The story is the memoir of a woman who had witnessed the 911 events in New York City and as a subsequent result found herself displaced from her job due to the economic slow down which ensued. Instead of looking for a new job right away, she saw this as a wake up call to do something she had always dreamed of doing which was to travel around the world with nothing more than a back pack and an around the world airline ticket. Each chapter provided a new adventure to the far reaches of the planet with descriptions of both people and scenery that provoked a desire for wanderlust in myself.
Suzanne's tale of global circumnavigation was nothing less than inspiring, particularly when she would tell of encounters with people in some of the worlds most remote regions that were both heart wrenching as well as laugh out loud funny. I felt as if she opened my eyes to places I never before imagined visiting, and never thought were accessible. If she was able to do this in the aftermath of 911 and at the beginning of the Iraq crisis, there is no reason why any of us cannot venture out of our comfort zones today. I think the more people, including myself, who take on the adventure of visiting and engaging with another culture, the closer we will become to appreciating others. That in a nutshell was the message I got from reading Suzanne Anthony's book. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

When the rest of us were cowering and wondering if it would ever be safe to fly again after 9/11, this gal decides to take a solo round the world backpacking trip through some of the most conflict prone areas of the planet....and has a magnificent time doing it! It's nice to read about boldness from someone who is also from Texas, but directing it in a life affirming and unifying way. For those of us who tend to hang out too long inside the box, her story works like a box cutter.

5 out of 5 starsTrip Around the World, 2008-06-24
I really enjoyed this book. It was like taking a trip around the world without having to pack a bag or ride on the packed airplanes. The quick chapters left me wanting more and the sly undertones of romance kept me wondering what was going to happen. How fantastic that she capitalized on her career situation and made this dream come true. Could be a self help book for people losing their jobs right now. There is an entire world to see - I'm just not sure where to start after the great recommendations in this book. If you are a diver, better get it quick!
