How to Travel on the Cheap

Tips to help make your next trip affordable.

For the seasoned traveler, traveling on a budget does not necessarily mean staying in fleabag hotels, dining on tasteless meals or flying in the cargo section of an airplane. During the past few years, the travel industry has experienced a higher demand for affordable and interesting travel destinations. One only has to surf the net and compare several itineraries offered by travel agencies or brokers in order to find the best deals in discounted airfares, inexpensive lodging, and affordable local transportation.

However, you need to keep in mind that these deals may only come into play when considering the time of year or season, for a particular destination. Traveling during peak season often means you will end up paying a higher price for just about everything. Not only that, but you will also have to deal with larger numbers of competing travelers flocking to the same travel destination, especially if it is a popular one.

After you have booked your itinerary, it is important to make sure that you have local transportation available when you reach your destination. Oftentimes, it may be necessary to make arrangements for this before you leave home. Find out if your hotel offers a shuttle service. Typically, a hotel shuttle service is free for guests and will often pick you up at the airport if it's nearby, or drive you to local destinations near the hotel. This will save you quite a bit of money, by avoiding would be taxi fares.

Also, if a complimentary breakfast is not included with your hotel room, try going to a local bakery or delicatessen and sample their specialties. Breakfast in bread will cost you, so make sure to stay away from the high cost of room service. You also want to avoid eating breakfast, lunch or dinner at the hotel restaurant, due to the fact that you will typically be charged more, when compared to dining elsewhere in the local community. Make sure you browse through a local guidebook for restaurants that offer savory meals on the cheap. If you can't decide where to eat, your best bet would be to ask the locals on where to go for a delicious inexpensive meal - they will not only give you tips on where to eat, but they can probably offer recommendations on what to order as well. If you are really on a tight budget you may want to stay away from eating at restaurants all together, and instead opt to buying food from a local grocery store or deli. This can save you time and money.

It’s also important that you keep your personal belongings and your money safe while traveling. Some travelers end up going beyond their intended budget simply because they misplace their wallet, and it gets stolen or lost.

Finally, what would traveling be like without shopping for souvenirs?  Many package or bus tours will bring you to “tourist shops”, where prices are much higher than other stores. You can usually find better bargains by staying away from these tourist traps and souvenir shops.

Before you leave on your trip, make a plan of how much you intend to spend each day and try to stick to it as much as possible during your travels. Having a planned daily budget can make you more you aware of what you are spending everyday, and will help you avoid overspending or maxing out your credit cards by the end of the trip.
